SCRIPT REVIEW: The Other Guys

SCRIPT REVIEW: The Other Guys

Rating: The undated screenplay for “The Other Guys”, originally titled “The Back Ups”, was written by Chris Henchy (“Land of the Lost”) and Adam McKay (“Anchorman”, “Talladega Nights”) and delivers countless laugh-out-loud moments, but fails in the story department. The film centers around underachieving detectives Allen (Will Ferrell) and Terry (Mark Wahlberg), who try to step up and fill a void left behind by two hero cops. If you liked “Anchorman”, “Talladega Nights”, and “Step Brothers”, … Read entire article »

SCRIPT REVIEW: Salt

SCRIPT REVIEW: Salt

Rating: Angelina Jolie’s “Salt” opens today, but will hopefully lure few victims into its siren trap. The story centers around CIA agent Evelyn Salt, whose presence is requested at the debriefing of a Russian defector. The defector reveals a decades old plan to brainwash Russian children as sleeper agents, who were then surgically altered and swapped with American children. One of these sleepers has been activated and will assassinate the Russian President at the funeral … Read entire article »

SCRIPT REVIEW: Jonah Hex

SCRIPT REVIEW: Jonah Hex

Rating: “Jonah Hex”, penned by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, is a bland mess of a script. The Good: The story starts out promising enough. Jonah Hex is a scarred bounty hunter and ex-Confederate cavalryman. He doesn’t seem very particular about who he has to kill, so long as he gets paid. The very first scene tells us what happens when a client decides not to pay. It’s a scene designed to show just how dangerous the … Read entire article »

SCRIPT REVIEW: The Karate Kid (2010)

SCRIPT REVIEW: The Karate Kid (2010)

Rating: This Friday sees the release of “The Karate Kid” starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan. Smith plays Dre Parker, who learns about life and kung fu from Jackie Chan’s Mr. Han. This project’s title went through a number of changes. Writer Christopher Murphey’s script is titled “Karate Kid”. However, Jackie Chan has said the film was called “Kung Fu Kid” during production and would most likely only be called “The Karate Kid” in Western countries. … Read entire article »

SCRIPT REVIEW: Get Him to the Greek

Rating: Opening today, “Get Him to the Greek” is the story of Aaron Green (Greenberg in the script), a recent college grad sent on an assigment which could make or break his career in the music industry. He must escort out-of-control rockstar Aldous Snow from London to Los Angeles for a comeback concert. Nicholas Stoller’s script (first revision) is more average than terrible, but fails to make the reader care about half its odd couple. One … Read entire article »

SCRIPT REVIEW: Killers

SCRIPT REVIEW: Killers

Rating: That’s right. This screenplay gets a perfect score. The movie won’t appeal to everyone, but screenwriters Bob DeRosa and Ted Griffin succeed in what they’re trying to do. If you haven’t seen the advertisements, the movie is about a married couple that goes through a rough patch when the husband’s spy past catches up to him. It’s a comedy with a lot of relationship humor. As much I personally can’t stand Ashton Kutcher, the script … Read entire article »

SCRIPT REVIEW: Prince of Persia

SCRIPT REVIEW: Prince of Persia

“Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time” opens tomorrow May 28. Here’s a review to help you decide if this is your kind of story. Rating: 2.5/5 Script reviews are tricky. Different factors come into play. Some films change very little from first draft to the final shooting script. Others go through significant changes as different writers are brought in to make revisions. However, the core of the story tends to remain the same. “Prince of Persia” is … Read entire article »

SCRIPT REVIEW: Predators

SCRIPT REVIEW: Predators

Rating: 4/5 On July 9, audiences will get their chance to see a new installment in the “Predator” franchise. Directed by Nimród Antal (“Vacancy”, “Armored”) and produced by Robert Rodriguez (“Sin City”), the sequel attempts to take the concept back to its jungle roots and erase all memory of the “AVP: Alien vs Predator” fiascos. How well does the screenplay accomplish this task? The screenplay, overall, works. The plot is as fast, brutal, and unrelenting … Read entire article »

SCRIPT REVIEW: The Social Network

Warning: Spoilers. When screenwriter Aaron Sorkin announced his intent to write a film about facebook, Internet users sighed a collective “Why?” It is difficult to imagine crafting an interesting plot around a website. Considering the daily interaction millions have with Facebook, it would seem even less plausible Sorkin could tell users anything they don’t already know. Nonetheless, Sorkin’s screenplay “The Social Network” delivers a character-driven drama every bit as compelling as his work on A Few Good Men and The West Wing. “The Social Network” details the unbelievable true story of Mark Zuckerberg, a Harvard computer science major who creates Facebook, rising to wealth and fame through theft and betrayal. The way events unfold is ridiculous and could easily be played for laughs. However, Sorkin treats the material seriously, crafting a … Read entire article »
